What do dentists and hygienists check for during routine cleanings and exams?

During routine cleanings and exams, dental professionals check for a variety of oral health issues, including:
  • Tooth decay
  • Inflammation or gum bleeding
  • Signs of oral cancer
  • Abnormalities in the mouth
  • Bad bites
X-rays may also be taken to detect problems not visible to the naked eye, such as issues below the gum line or inside the teeth. Additionally, they assess the overall health of your teeth, gums, and jaw.

How many routine dental visits should I schedule per year?

It is generally recommended to schedule two routine dental visits per year, typically every six months. These biannual visits allow our team to monitor your oral health, perform professional cleanings, and catch potential issues early. Regular visits help prevent the development of cavities, gum disease, and other dental problems, ensuring that any concerns are addressed promptly. However, some individuals with specific dental conditions, like periodontal disease, may need more frequent visits for deep dental cleanings.

Are my gums healthy or do I need periodontal care?

Healthy gums are firm, pink, and do not bleed during brushing or flossing. Signs that you may need periodontal care include red, swollen, or bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, gum recession, and loose teeth. During your routine visits, your dentist is checking for these symptoms and measuring the depth of the gum pockets around your teeth. If gum disease is detected, a periodontal care plan, including deep cleanings and possibly other treatments, will be recommended to restore gum health.

Will professional teeth cleanings whiten my teeth?

Professional teeth cleanings can help slightly whiten your teeth by removing surface stains and plaque buildup, resulting in a cleaner and brighter smile. However, they do not change the natural color of your teeth. For more noticeable whitening, additional treatments such as professional teeth whitening services are required. These treatments use professional-grade whitening agents to brighten the color of your smile, providing a much more noticeable difference in whiteness compared to regular cleanings.
